Play For Keeps

Keyboard Course

PFK invites budding musicians that are 8 years old and above, even adults, to start keyboard lessons! For this course, groups are curated for similar age groups.

The main focus of the PFK course is:

• to produce an independent keyboard player

• to help the student to become an all-round musician who is comfortable in a range of styles and has a good repertoire

• to develop a strong technique, fluent reading ability, a sound theoretical grasp and good aural acuity

• to learn skills in arranging and improvising

If desired, our lessons can help you prepare for a graded certificate with Rock School Limited. The Yamaha grade 1-8 syllabus is accredited by RSL Awards (Rockschool). Grades 6-8 are worth up to 30 UCAS points.

  • There is not set time frame for the Play for Keeps Course. We curate our lesson schedule to cater for different abilities, allowing students to be nurtured in an environment that suits their playing ability, natural pace of development and age.

  • We highly recommend you have a Yamaha E473 keyboard at home, which you can purchase from us at YMS Croydon. If you have a keyboard/piano at home already, this should be fine to support you at home too.

Each PFK book corresponds with a grade exam, so there are 8 books in total.

  • Adults are not required to attend every lesson. However, we recommend arriving 5 mins before class to take down homework with your child and ask any questions.

  • Play for Keeps is perfect for you whether you want to learn to play keyboard for your own enjoyment or professionally and it is never too late to start. You can join us from 8 years old to adulthood, all are welcome!

Classes will be grouped in similar age ranges.
